OK- let´s talk numbers. Everyone know that the house has an edge in roulette (if you didn´t, you do no). If we are talking American Roulette, the house edge is 5.2%, whereas the house edge in European Roulette is 2.6%.

This is because the house edge is influenced by the existance of the zero pockets (or pockets in American). Think about a bet on red. There are equal numbers of red pockets as there are black pockets, so you would expect a 50/50 chance when making this bet, which pays out at 1:1- which seems all fine and dandy. But remember that the house does not pay out on bets when the ball falls in the zero pocket. This creates the edge. And because American Roulette has has one more zero pocket than European Roulette, there is more chance of the ball landing in a zero pocket, and thus the edge is lower.

Incidently, if you play french roulette that abides by "La Partage" rule, you will get half of your money back if the ball lands in the zero after you make an even money bet (like red or black).

So is there any reason to play American Roulette? Well, the table limits tend to be higher, and if you like playing single number zero bets, you have more choice obviously. But we tend to play European roulette, given the choice.
