Red Dog, (or red dog poker or yablon) is a card game popular at most casinos. The game is played with a standard, 52-card variety, with anything from one to eight decks. The more decks that are in play, the better your odds and the worse the house edge. The house edge on 1 deck Red Dog is 3.2% and  2.8% on 8 deck Red Dog.

This sets it apart from games such as blackjack, in which the house edge decreases when there are less decks in the pack (also it is alot easier to card count a 1 deck shoe in blackjack!)

You play 3 cards and you score as below:. Ignore the suites- they don't come into it.

You place your bet, and 2 cards are dealt face up with three possible scenarios.

  1. The cards make up a mini run (eg: 2,3 or J,Q)- in this case the hand is a push and you get your bet back.
  2. You get 2 cards of the same value- another card is dealt. If this is  also of the same value you get paid on a 3 of a kind which pays out at 11:1.
  3. You have the option to double your bet, if you have any other scenario (eg a 4 and a 7),  and another card is dealt.
If the next card's value sits inbetween the first two, you are paid out according to a spread. If not, the bet is lost. So if you have a 4 and a 6, your spread is 1. If you have a 3 and a 10, your spread is 6, as there are 6 cards that sit between your two.

Spread    Payout
1-card    5 to 1
2-card    4 to 1
3-card    2 to 1
4-to-11-card    1 to 1 (even money)

Our Red Dog Tip
Only increase your bet if you have a large spread (eg 7 or more).
